Minnetonka Police were called to an apartment complex at 11367 Fairfield Road on a report of a stabbing about 8:15 Saturday night.

When officers arrived, they found a 16-year-old male with a life-threatening stab wound to the chest. CPR was initiated, and the victim was transported to North Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead, "It's still early but we know there was some kind of an altercation between the two boys, " said Police Chief Scott Boerboom.

Police believe the victim’s 12-year-old brother used a kitchen knife to commit the stabbing. The mother and other family members were home at the time of the incident. Police are working with the family to determine the circumstances that led to the stabbing. "Our detectives are working closely with the family, and part of that will be to speak with the child."

The suspect, who was not injured, was also transported to the hospital where he is under evaluation. Because the suspect is a minor, police will not release his name at this time.

"It's a tragic situation. This family was torn apart, but we are a strong community and we will be with this family to support them."

The 12 year old is currently with his family, while the police investigate to determine what charges should be filed.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner will release the name of the victim.
