The Stillwater Correctional Facility is on lockdown once again, after an assault late Wednesday morning on a corrections officer.

“Our corrections officers responded quickly and professionally and contained the incident,” said Spokeswoman Sarah Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald said the assault happened in the B-East living unit. The sergeant who was attacked was evaluated and later released.

Until further notice, the facility will remain on lockdown while the attack is under investigation, according to Fitzgerald.

2018 was a troubling year for Minnesota Prisons. Last July, an inmate murdered corrections officer Joseph Gomm at the Stillwater Prison. Last September, Officer Joe Parise died when he responded to an attack by an inmate at on fellow officer. That same month, an inmate punched a Rush City Prison guard in the face. Then last November, an inmate at the Faribault Facility injured two officers.

Leaders at AFSCME Council 5, the union representing Minnesota prisons said prison facilities are understaffed and unsafe in Minnesota.
