Back to the 50s weekend

Back to the 50's; bigger and better than ever

Three days of classic cars at the state fairgrounds

They're coming by the thousands to the historic Minnesota State Fairgrounds in Falcon Heights, and it's still another two months until the fair begins.

And they're coming by cars. Classic cars.

The Minnesota Street Rod Association's Back to the 50's weekend, now in its 45th year, is one of the more popular car shows in the US. Attendees comes from all over.

"I have a friend who's been coming here for 45 year," said Dave Sells from St. Louis, Mo. "We're both car guys, and he says you need to come. So here we are."

And like nearly everyone, it's not a one-and-done deal.

"All day today," he said on Friday morning, not long before the gates opened. "And if we don't fall down and can't move tomorrow, we might come back."

Dave and others are looking forward to Sunday's Swap Meet, where classic car enthusiasts look to buy and sell those hard-to-find parts for their projects.

Crews have been busy the past few weeks setting up stands for vendors to sell all kinds of car accessories, from chrome bumpers to gas tanks, to windshield seals.

But it's really about one thing.

"The cars," said Linda of Minneapolis. "Anything that has to do with the cars."

Linda has been coming to Back to the 50's back not long after the 50's ended.

"It just get bigger and better," she said. "Parking sucks on the grounds. It's fun. I take off work to come."

One problem folks are already talking about is the limited space for vendors because of the massive construction project on the fairgrounds' north end.

When will that be done?

"August 23rd?" one fairgrounds worker said, with a wink, naming the opening day of the State Fair.

That's another story.
