A corrections officer at Oak Park Heights prison is dead after helping another officer who had been assaulted by an inmate.

The Minnesota Department of Corrections says Officer Joseph Parise, 37,  responded to the assault of another officer around noon Monday at the prison, and after returning to his post, Parise had what's described as a medical emergency.  The DOC says he was rushed to Regions Hospital, where he died.

The Department of Corrections says two responding officers were injured while responding to the original assault, and treated and released. It's not clear if Officer Parise sustained an injury during the assault.

Officer Parise had been with the Department of Corrections for four years. He is the second Department of Corrections officer to die following an incident in a Minnesota prison this year. In July, Officer Joseph Gomm was assaulted and killed by an inmate at Stillwater Prison.

The Oak Park Heights Prison is on lock down.
