Three people had to be rescued near the mouth of Minnehaha Falls after Thursday evening's sudden downpour.

Minneapolis Park Police responded at around 8 p.m. when a group of five people fishing got caught in the water drainage outlet where the creek goes into the Mississippi River.

Two people were able to get to safety themselves, but three were left holding on to avoid being swept away.

“Our officers were able to provide a life jacket to a man and rope two others to secure themselves until Minneapolis Fire responded and they were able to retrieve them out of the situation,” Dawn Sommers of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board said.

The three people rescued were treated at HCMC, but there were no injuries reported at the scene.

Across the metro, Thursday evening’s severe weather knocked out power and took down branches with strong wind and rain. Friday could see more rain in the mix, but the heat is certain with a projected high near 90 degrees.
