A maintenance worker found a badly decomposed body in a St. Paul drainage ditch and police are now trying to identify who it is.

The body was found near Randolph Avenue and West Seventh Street about 4:30 p.m. Monday.

"The body may have been there a long time," said St. Paul police spokesman Steve Linders. "It was very decomposed."

Investigators initially could not tell if the body was that of a man or woman, age, or cause of death.

The remains are now in the hands of the Ramsey County medical examiner.

"A lot of work will have to go into this before we will have any answers," said Linders. "Where it came from, we don't know, but we'll try to figure that out."

Ramsey County sheriff's deputies also responded to the scene after the call came in from the Xcel Energy maintenance worker.

It's not known yet if the person's death was the result of anything suspicious.
