Gone are the days of parking at a meter in downtown Minneapolis for more than two hours.

The city has shortened maximum parking times in many cases from 8 hours to 2

"Folks parking there, their tires could be chalked, and then the enforcement officer would come out after two hours and you could be ticketed after being there longer than two hours time," said Minneapolis Parking System Manager Tim Drew.

Parking rates in Minneapolis are also increased for the first time in 20 years.

The goal is to provide convenient, short-term parking in and around all of the newer downtown developments

Drew said they made the decision after reviewing research that showed downtown Minneapolis meters are full 90 percent of the time.
