A firefighter responding to an explosion caused by a gas line break that rocked downtown Sun Prairie Wisconsin on Tuesday night has died, authorities said at an early morning press conference.

The blast leveled several buildings in the Madison suburb. At least six other firefighters were injured, along with a police officer who was treated at the scene.

A couple of civilians also suffered minor injuries.

Investigators say a contractor struck a natural gas main shortly before the explosion rocked the town of 30,000 people.

The explosion created a large evacuation zone. Many in that area were still not allowed back into their homes and businesses as of early Wednesday morning.
