One man is dead and another in custody following a Sunday night fight near the University of Minnesota's Twin Cities campus.

Police arrived in the area of University Avenue and Oak Street where two men were having an altercation.

"We are careful not to call this a homicide," siad MPD spokesman John Elder. "We don't have a clear picture."

One man was arrested and later released, while the other was taken to HCMC with critical injuries.  He died a short time later at the hospital.

"We know who this individual is who we had taken into custody," said MPD spokesman John Elder. "He did call 911 and did speak with dispatchers. He remained on the scene and waited for officers to arrive. He is continuing to cooperate, and will continue to cooperate."

Investigators say the men met earlier Sunday at Sally's Saloon. They left the bar and began fighting near University and Oak, near TCF Bank Stadium.

There are no identifications released and the Hennepin County medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

"We'll do our full investigation and then based up on what the medical examiner says we will refer charges to the Hennepin County attorney's office for their review and formal charging," said Elder. "We will wait for the medical examiner's determination if this was, in fact, a homicide."

Police are asking anyone who has more information about the incident to contact Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
