Fischbach sworn in as Lieutenant Governor

After months of resistance, Fischbach resigned her Senate seat

After months of resisting, State Sen. Michelle Fischbach was sworn in as Minnesota's 49th Lt. Governor at a ceremony in the Governor's reception room at the capitol Friday morning.

Fischbach automatically rose to the position after Gov. Mark Dayton appointed Tina Smith to fill out the remainder of the term left by former Sen. Al Franken. But she and state Republicans refused being sworn in while she was still serving in her elected role as senator, making sure Republicans maintained a one-seat advantage in that chamber.

With the legislative session over, Fishbach now will embrace the job as Lt. Governor full time. That means her senate seat will be vacant and Dayton will need to call a special session to fill that seat.
