Lots of cars

What do you get when you hold four sporting events in downtown Minneapolis at the same time?

Lots of traffic, that's what

The summer of traffic headaches in downtown Minnesota carves out another chapter Friday night, with multiple sporting events taking place within a compacted area.

If you think traffic was bad around the state fairgrounds Thursday, get a load at what's happening tonight in downtown Minneapolis:

  • Twins vs. Oakland at Target Field
  • Vikings vs. Seattle at US Bank Stadium
  • Big Ten/ACC volleyball challege at Target Center
  • Boxing at the Armory

That all means at least 100,000 people going into Minneapolis early in the evening while commuters are trying to go home

Minneapolis traffic engineer Steve Mosing says there will be extra traffic control officers on the streets, and there will be some adjustments to the traffic signal timing.

"We've had multiple events in downtown Minneapolis before, and we have a plan in place," he said. "The roadway system may be a little bit delayed due to the additional traffic coming in for events as commuters are leaving downtown Minneapolis.

And then, there's the weather.

Rain is in the forecast, which will make things that much more difficult when trying to get in and get out.
