Minneapolis city leaders are taking steps to help people living in a homeless encampment near Hiawatha Avenue and Cedar Avenue.

There are currently dozens of tents set up along the side of the road.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey says they will work with the American Indian community, Hennepin County and the Minnesota Department of Transportation to address both the short and long-term needs of people at the encampment... some of whom suffer from serious illness and addiction.

"Drug trafficking has risen," said Frey. "Disease with associated exposure to hazardous materials has also spiked."

The plan to help with immediate needs, and then provide access to treatment and ultimately provide them with affordable housing.
