It's been pointed out that if the government shuts down tomorrow night, it will be only a partial shutdown. But that doesn't mean it won't have an effect on folks across the country. WCCO listener "Betty" called in with the story of how it would affect her.

“Because of where I work, there’s not much I can say without retaliation,” she told Paul and Jordana, “but this is something I get to worry about over Christmas when my daughter from the military comes home – the one year she gets to come home – and this is what I get to fret about?”

“Betty” wasn’t unsympathetic to the need for border security but isn’t a fan of having her paycheck used as leverage to get that funding.

“We’re not unpatriotic,” she said, “My entire family are veterans, I’m a veteran. Yes of course I believe in security. But why does my paycheck, my security have to pay for it? I don’t understand that.”

Asked who “Betty” would blame if the government does shut down, she didn’t hesitate.

“Right now, I heard Trump say it out of his mouth. He’s proud to do it,” she told Paul and Jordana, “How is he proud to make people suffer? I mean, we don’t deserve that.”

Congress has until midnight tomorrow to pass a bill that the President is willing to sign.
