Plans are in the works for a massive water park to be built next to the Mall of America.

It'll be located on what's now a parking lot east of Ikea on the north side of the Mall with an estimated price tag of $ 250 million. Bloomington's Port Authority is meeting this week with the city and Mall officials.

"The water park would have a footprint of about 250,000 square feet, which would make it one of the largest indoor water parks in North America," Port Authority Administrator Shane Rudlang said.

Construction could begin as soon as late 2019 with it open for business in 2021, but things like the cost of steel and interest rates could affect progress.

To avoid affecting property taxes if revenue doesn't meet expectations, the city and mall plan to choose a nonprofit to take on the tax-exempt debt and contract with an operator. The city would then own the park after 30 years.
