Neighbors are back in their homes after an hours-long armed standoff in Maplewood that started when police say a stolen vehicle crashed into a house.

It ended peacefully overnight after about four hours and a man, identified by police as 48-year-old Kelly Gordon Sauer, is in custody.

St. Paul Police Department spokesman Steve Linders says a stolen vehicle took off into Maplewood and crashed into the back of a home in the 1700 block of Sylvan Street.

"As officers approached the vehicle and tried to check on the driver to make sure he was OK and also try to get him out of the vehicle, he refused to exit and he also indicated and showed them a weapon, so officers baacked away," Linders said.

Negotiators were brought to the scene and neighbors were evacuated. There were no reports of injuries.

The department says Sauer was booked into the Ramsey County Jail and is awaiting charges. The total damage to the home has not been determined.
