A man was critically injured in a shooting Tuesday afternoon in the Phillips Neighborhood of Minneapolis.

It happened before 1 p.m. at the Speedway gas station in the 2400 block of Bloomington Avenue South. The scene of the daylight shooting is often busy, near a bus stop and surrounded by residential neighborhoods.

Minneapolis Police Department spokesman John Elder says it started with an altercation between two groups.

"(Officers) found that two of the vehicles that were involved fled the scene prior to their arrival," he said. "Officers located one adult male with what is deemed to be grave injuries."

The man, who has not been identified, is at HCMC in critical condition.

It's not known what led to the altercation. No suspects are in custody at this time. Elder says investigators spent the afternoon speaking to potential witnesses and people nearby.
