A married couple is dead after a hit-and-run crash in Eagan.

The husband and wife, ages 74 and 57, respectively, were taking their daily evening stroll before 10 p.m. Thursday — an activity they did for exercise near their home, according to authorities.

Officers arrived to find the two victims in the parking lot of a business at 2020 Silver Bell Road. They were pronounced dead at Regions Hospital.

Eagan Police Deputy Chief Roger New says the suspect, 36-year-old Jonna Kojo Armartey, was taken into custody at 5 a.m. Friday at the AmericInn Hotel on Glazier Road in Apple Valley thanks to tips.

"We had a number of citizens call and provide information to us, as far as possible as far as some suspect vehicles," he said. "Some citizens directed us to a local business in the city and pointed out the vehicle."

Armartey was arrested six hours after the vehicle was found at a nearby business, La Fonda De Los Lobos, on Highway 13 in Eagan. New did not specify how the suspect got from that business to the AmericInn Hotel. They are not looking for any other suspects.

The investigation is on-going and officials haven’t determined if alcohol was involved. New says they believe it was a random act and they do not believe the suspect and victims knew each other. New says at this time they do not know how fast the suspect was going in the parking lot, but they are looking for security footage from nearby businesses. State Patrol is assisting in reconstructing the collision.

The Dakota County Attorney’s Office will decide possible charges. Armartey is currently being held in the Dakota County Jail.

The couple has not been identified, pending the notification of family.
