A Minneapolis man and former high school coach is dead after tipping his canoe on Sawbill Lake in the Boundary Waters.

The Cook County Sheriff's office says 75-year-old Niles Schulz was on the water with four others Tuesday afternoon when they heard a splash. They say he struggled with trying to flip the canoe back over before he went under.

His body was found around 5:30 pm.

The Star Tribune reports that Schulz at one time coached wrestling and football at Minneapolis Edison High School.

He also more recently served as a vice president of the Edison Community and Sports Foundation.
