One of the world's leading experts on coronavirus research, Dr. Michael Osterholm, says that he has been getting death threats because of the information he has been giving.

"I can tell you that my email is complete with people who think I would be better off if I wasn't alive because of statements I've made about this situation," Osterholm told Paul Douglas.

Still, he's taking it in stride.

"It happens to all of us working in this field," Osterholm said. "You learn to live with it and move forward. There are always going to be some out there. This shouldn't be a divisive issue where it's 50/50 or 40/60, we should all be together on this."

Dr. Osterholm also spoke with The Morning News with Dave Lee about the threats.

"Well, you know, these are difficult times, and they surely bring out the difference in individuals in terms of what they believe is happening and why it's happening. I know that these are hard economic times for some and none of us minimize for a moment the impact this is having in people's lives who are not directly infected by the coronavirus.

"But, we also recognize what it could be like if we weren't taking some of these steps. As bad as things are right now, they could be much, much worse. And so I think that's the challenge we have is helping people understand that our job is to make things not happen and have everyone think we overreacted, as opposed to having people all wondering why didn't we do more to have avoided what surely could happen."

Dr. Osterholm, who is the University of Minnesota's Director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy has been a strong proponent of keeping the economy shut down during this time and to plan for this to be a 12-18 month marathon. He has also been critical of the United States Surgeon General and disagreed with President Trump on cutting funding to the World Health Organization. The doctor also made headlines when he declared that "we are never getting back to normal."

Hear Dr. Osterholm on The Morning News with Dave Lee every Monday and Wednesday morning at 7:20.
