Four-time cancer survivor Casey O'Brien received a standing ovation Thursday night when he was given the Disney Spirit Award in Atlanta.

His family from St. Paul and Gopher coach PJ Fleck were in the audience for the ceremony, where O'Brien sent out a message of hope to others who are battling cancer.

"Just show up every morning, and whatever those doctors tell you to do, they're looking out for you, they've got your best interest, and they're going to take care of you," he said.

O'Brien is the 24th recipient of the award, given to college football's most inspirational figure.

He made his Gopher debut this season, holding for extra points, the team's wins over Rutgers and Maryland.

All this comes after doctors told the former Cretin-Derham Hall standout told him his football playing days were over.

"Those doctors had never met me before, and they didn't know how much I loved football," O'Brien said when asked about it during the program.

O'Brien still has not been cleared to fly, so he and his family had to drive to Atlanta from Minnesota to accept the award in person.
