One person is dead after a stabbing early New Year's Day in Minneapolis and another is dead after a shooting in St. Paul. They're first homicides of 2020 for both cities.

Minneapolis police responded to the intersection of West Broadway and Emerson Avenue just before 5:00 a.m. Wednesday. That's where they found two people suffering from stab wounds. One person died at the scene and another person was treated for non-life threatening injuries at North Memorial Hospital.

Police are investigating a nearby car crash to see if it's related to the homicide.

In St. Paul, one person was shot to death early Wednesday morning near Johnny Baby's in the 900 block of University Avenue West.

It's a deadly start to the new year. Less than 12 hours earlier, Minneapolis police confirmed the city's 48th homicide of 2019. A woman in her 20s was shot in North Minneapolis. The woman was found in an alley in the 1300 block of Russell Avenue North. She was rushed to North Memorial and later died.
