Echo Park elementary teacher Qorsho Hassan was named the 2020 Minnesota Teacher of the Year on Thursday. Hassan, who teaches fourth grade, is the 56th recipient of the award and the second from the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan district to receive the award from Education Minnesota.

Hassan told Dave Lee during the WCCO Morning News to talk about the award on Friday morning.

"Definitely want to change teacher of color retention and support," Hassan said. "I want to make sure all students are receiving equitable education and not getting the short end of the stick. I feel like we need to move towards flexible and alternative education in providing spaces for students to design their own learning."

This will be Hassan's first year in the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan district. She taught for three years in Burnsville, and before that, three years in Ohio and one year as a teacher in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as part of a Fulbright Fellowship.

An independent selection committee representing Minnesota leaders in education, business and government chooses the Minnesota Teacher of the Year from individuals who are nominated and who then choose to become a candidate.

There were 134 candidates and 10 finalists for this year’s award.
