Metro Transit officials say upgrades to their Mall of America transit station are just about finished, with the new facility opening Monday.

Among the work that needs to be done is demolition of the old facility, which was in operation for more than 25 years and was last upgraded when the light rail blue line went into service in 2004.

Much of the $25 million renovation project was completed in about a year, and includes a corridor from the station directly into the shopping center.

Before, light rail and bus passengers would have to go outside and cross a busy street to enter the mall.

The upgrades include better lighting and improved restrooms for families.

A Metro Transit spokesman says nearly three-million passengers are expected to use the station every year.

A grand opening of the Mall's transit center takes place next month.

The Mall of America station, located in the bottom level of the east-side parking ramp, is one of Metro Transit's busiest hubs.
