Normandale Community College student is expected to make his first court appearance on Friday after he allegedly assaulted two faculty members, and was carrying a gun without a permit.

Investigators say it started around 11 am Wednesday with a dispute in a classroom between 21-year old Gavin Hutson  of St. Paul and a 51-year-old female instructor. Bloomington Deputy Police Chief Mike Hartley says after the class was dismissed, the instructor then talked with Hutson.

“That’s when the assault occurred,” said Deputy Chief Hartley. “While that assault was taking place another instructor who was an adult male intervened.”

Police say Hutson struck the female instructor several times and also assaulted the 47-year-old male instructor who stepped in to help. Police allege a third person had also been assaulted as Hutson left the building. The female was taken to Fairview Southdale Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

After Hutson left the scene, Bloomington Police located him in the college's parking ramp, and made an discovered a firearm in his backpack.

Hutson was charged with assault and carrying a firearm without a permit.
