Officers identified in fatal Eagan shooting

The identities of five officers involved in an officer involved shooting on July 2 in Eagan were released Saturday. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau and Criminal Apprehension says all five of the officers fired their rifles, resulting in the death of Isak Abdirahman Aden, 23, of Columbia Heights.

Officers involved are:

  • Officer Anthony Kiehl, Bloomington Police Department, six years in law enforcement.
  • Officer Daniel Nelson, Bloomington Police Department, 10 years in law enforcement.
  • Officer Jacob Peterson, Eagan Police Department, 10 years in law enforcement.
  • Officer Matt Ryan, Bloomington Police Department, 11 years in law enforcement.
  • Officer Adam Stier (steer), Bloomington Police Department, 12 years in law enforcement.

All are on standard administrative leave.

According to a preliminary investigation, Eagan police responded to a 911 call Tuesday, July 2, shortly after 6 p.m. from a woman who reported a man pointed a gun at her and threatened her in the area of Highway 13 and Burgundy Drive in Eagan. Prior to police arriving, the man now identified as Isak Aden, had exited and fled the from the vehicle. Officers later spotted Aden running into a small wooded area near Highway 13 and Silver Bell Road.

Aden fled a wooded area as officers established a perimeter and was later found in a parking lot next to a business on Seneca Road in Eagan. Negotiations with Aden to drop his firearm and surrendent went on for almost four hours according to police. It was during those negotations when shots were fired by the aforementioned officers. Aden was taken by ambulance to Regions Hospital in St. Paul where he died.

A handgun and a cartridge casing were found next to Aden. No one else was injured. The BCA continues to investigate. The family is urging the BCA to release video from the incident.
