Downtown shooting leads to one death

It's the seventh reported homicide in Minneapolis in 2019

May 03, 2019 - 10:50 am

The seventh reported homicide of the year in Minneapolis is a man who was shot early Friday morning downtown in the 300 block of First Avenue.

There are no suspects in custody.

"There was an altercation or a disturbance between two groups of people, it escalated into a shooting," said the MPD's John Elder.

The call came from a friend of a person who was attending to the wounded man, said Elder.

"First precinct officers and the inspector are meeting with business owners and people that live in that area, not only to see what people may have heard or seen, but to talk about strategies, to talk about the incident," he said.

Of the seven homicides reported in Minneapolis this year, Elder said this is the first to happen in the city's downtown.

"We've had some really great strides in crime reduction in the downtown area," he said. "We just want to get back on track with that, not only with the business owners but with the residents."

The man who was shot died hours after he was taken to HCMC.

The victim's name is not released.
