Delano's Peppermint Twist Drive-In has carried the tradition of serving of great food and a fun atmosphere each summer since the early 1980's.

The drive-in, located just off Highway 12 in Delano, is hard to miss with its pink exterior and drive-up ordering booths. Mike and Vicki Mirenda have owned the Peppermint Twist since 1982.

"It was originally built in 1957 and operated as an A&W," Vicki said. "When we bought it, we updated a lot of things in and around the building. There's no heat here, so it's definitely a summer business."

Hungry customers line-up throughout the summer for burgers, fries, shakes, and more. The Peppermint Twist is popular among tourists who travel to Delano each year for the oldest, and largest, Fourth of July Celebration in Minnesota. Locals keep on coming back, too.

"We come back maybe three or four times a summers," said lifelong Delano resident, Linda Schrode. "They've got the best fried onions and raspberry shakes."

Each order is freshly prepared and often enjoyed at Teddy Bear Park, which tables, chairs, Hoola-Hoops, and stuffed animals.

"We call it the Pepperming Twist compounds," Vicki said. "There's this whole area in the back where kids and adults are eating and just having fun."

Students are often hired to work each summer at the Peppermint Twist, which contributes to the family-like atmosphere.

"It's fun to see our employees grow and often come back with their own kids," Vicki said.

The Peppermint Twist is open Tuesday through Sunday from May to mid-October depending on the weather. Posted hours are 11 a.m. until 9 p.m.
