Twins' owner Jim Pohlad says he was caught off guard by management's decision to relieve Paul Molitor of managerial duties.

"I will admit to being somewhat surprised at the recommendation," he told Dave Lee on the WCCO Morning News Wednesday, the day after the announcement. "After I listened to them, that it was well thought out, I agreed."

The former Twin and Gopher and St. Paul native won Manager of the Year in 2017 and led Minnesota to a 78-84 finish this year. He was offered another role with the team and said in a statement he will consider staying on.

Pohlad says planning is underway for the 2019 season, but the club will allow Joe Mauer to take his time making a decision on his playing future.
