Remembrances for Castile, Blevins

Vigil in Falcon Heights, peace march in Minneapolis

July 06, 2018 - 6:49 am

Two gatherings took place Friday to remember Twin Cities men who were shot and killed by police officers, one of them exactly two years ago.

It was July 6, 2016 when Philando Castile was shot and killed by Saint Anthony police officer Jeronimo Yanez.

The shooting happened during a traffic stop, and Castile's girlfriend live-streamed the aftermath on Facebook.

Yanez was acquitted of manslaughter charges and fired by the Saint Athony police department.

A candelight vigil took place at the scene of the shooting, near the northern gate of the Minnesota State fairgrounds.

Also Friday, a peace walk took place at Minneapolis city hall in reaction to last month's officer-involved shooting of Thurman Belvins.

The 30-year-old man was shot while running from police, who were responding to a 911 call of someone shooting off a gun in the northside neighborhood.
