The Minnesota DNR has issued a red flag warning due to the very dry conditions and high fire danger in the southern half of the state. State Fire Marshal Jim Smith says it's important that people be extremely careful.

"It will start on fire if a cigarette is thrown out a car window if you do any kind of recreational burning and you have sparks," Smith said. "They can fly and start a large fire. So we're very concerned right now with these conditions"

Smith says even if we get a little rain today as expected, it won't really help the dry conditions much, and can actually make them worse.

"It's very difficult to get ahead of these things when the wind is blowing like this and the grass is this dry"
