A man is arrested in St. Paul after an apartment building was evacuated due to a strong chemical smell in the basement.

Crews were called to the 200 block of Dayton Avenue around 8 p.m. Tuesday.

An officer and firefighters complained of dizziness while responding. All were treated at the scene except for the officer, who was taken to Regions Hospital for further evaluation and released.

The man was found in the basement and taken into custody for "interfering with the investigation."

The St. Paul Police Ordinance Disposal Unit and St. Paul Fire Hazardous materials teams remained on scene late into the night. They have not said what led to the strong odor.
