One is dead following an apartment building fire early Sunday morning on St. Paul's east side.

The fire was on the first and second floor of a triplex on Clarence Street north of Maryland Ave., not far from Lake Phalen's southeast shore.

Crews arriving at the scene around 12:20 a.m. say they saw residents jumping to safety out of upper floors.

After the fire was out, the victim's body was found on the second floor.

"It's horrible, this is a tough night for us, it's a tough night for this family, and it's a tough night for the residents of St. Paul," said St. Paul assistant fire chief Mike Gaede.

Crews were able to rescue four people from the upper floors of the building. It's not known how the fire started.
