Out to pasture

Officer injuries prompts St. Paul police to end horse patrols

February 15, 2019 - 6:13 am

St. Paul Police are putting their mounted patrols out to pasture.

Chief Todd Axtell says they are getting rid of mounted patrols and motorcycle patrols because of an increase in officer injuries.

An official with St. Paul police say even though people like to see the officers on horseback, the time has come to move on.

Nine officers who rode the horses are being reassigned to neighborhood patrol in squad cars, while three others will focus on distracted driving.

Three horses will be returned to people who donated them.

Police are working on finding homes for the others.
