After more than a year of being closed, St. Paul's High Bridge reopens to traffic today.

Work was completed to construct a new bridge deck, after an inspection revealed the old deck was deteriorating.

The bridge connects St. Paul's West Seventh neighborhood and the West Side and West St. Paul.

MnDOT's Dale Gade says reopening the bridge is welcome to many, and not just St. Paul residents.

"We noted that there's some commercial traffic that actually uses (the bridge) that comes from as far away as places some as Iowa."

Gade says users of the bridge will notice changes.

"The roadway will be narrower, and there will be a wider area for pedestrians and bicyclists on the sides of the bridge.  There will also be taller railings.  The original railings were about four feet tall, they will now be about nine feet."

An official opening ceremony will be held December 2nd.
