Minnesota Supreme Court associate justice Paul Thissen, appointed by Governor Dayton during the spring, has his public swearing in Tuesday at the Landmark Center in St. Paul.

The former Minnesota House Speaker was appointed to the state Supreme Court on April 17 and sworn in on May 14 in a civil ceremony.

Thissen was first elected to the state House of Representatives in 2002. He served as House Speaker during the 2013-14 legislative sessions.

He was appointed to fill the vacancy left by David Stras, a Tim Pawlenty appointee who left the Minnesota Supreme COurt for the federal Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Thissen is the first to move directly from the Minnesota legislature to the state supreme court, and also the first former House Speaker to serve on the bench.
