An 18-year old man has been arrested and charged with the killing of a Minneapolis community activist in 2015.

The suspect was 14 at the time of the murder of Susan Spiller, a local artist and North Minneapolis activist, who was found dead in her north side home in July of 2015.

Tom Arneson is managing attorney for the Hennepin County Attorney's Office Juvenile Division.

"The break in this case came when fingerprints from the murder scene were found to match the suspect's.  That did not happen until just recently, and it came up after the suspect turned 18 and those fingerprints were taken in an unrelated case."

Although charges have been filed, the suspect is charged in juvenile court, so the name of the young man and other details are not being released.

Back on July 16 of 2015, police were called to do a welfare check at Spiller's home on the 51-hundred block of Dupont Avenue North.  They found her dead inside, and there was signs of a forced-entry.

Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo praised Spiller's family for their cooperation with investigators and their trust in seeking the truth.

"Ms. Spiller was an artist and a community activist. While her death shocked many, it was Susan Spiller's life and spirit that has insipired her community and our entire city of Minneapolis," he said.

The suspect appeared in juvenile court Tuesday.
