Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel days of the year at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, but Wednesday morning proved to be smooth both at the airport and on highways.

Though it likely won't break the single-day record set the day after Super Bowl 52 when approximately 61,000 walked through security at MSP, around 45,000 are expected to take off to meet with loved ones, or go on vacation.

"We're going to Seattle for the in-laws," Philip Overgaard said. "They've seen him a couple of times, but he gets big all the time. They're excited."

"We are travelling to Florida to meet his family over there and have a little bit of warmth and good food," Greysha Burgos said.

The airport was devoid of long lines for tickets and security in the morning, but airport officials caution coming earlier than usual.

"It looks OK," Riz Alvi said. "I showed up early thinking that it would be pretty busy, but I'm surprised. It doesn't look as bad as I thought it would."

AAA predicts more than 54 million people will travel at least 50 miles for Thanksgiving, the most since 2005 and 2.5 million more than 2017.
