The University of Minnesota has renamed the press box at TCF Bank Stadium in honor of the sports legend and WCCO Radio's longest standing employee, Sid Hartman.

A plaque has been placed inside the press box with the following text:

In honor of one of its most recognizable and loyal supporters, the University of Minnesota dedicated and named the TCF Bank Stadium press box for Sid Hartman on November 17, 2018. A legendary Twin Cities sports media personality often known simply as "Sid" throughout Minnesota, Hartman has spent much of his life offering insight and opinions about every player, coach and team in the state to generations of readers and listeners.

No program – collegiate, professional or otherwise – is held more dearly or cared for as passionately by Hartman than the Golden Gophers. He began covering the Gophers for the Minneapolis Times in 1944 and his first article for the Minnesota Tribune published on May 19, 1948. Appropriately, it covered the Gophers' upcoming spring game at Memorial Stadium and the team's Hall of Fame coach, Bernie Bierman. It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship between Hartman and his home state, a relationship that has lasted more than 70 years.

Hartman has been a fixture at Gopher sporting events for decades. During that time, he's covered every significant moment for the Gophers, from historic victories to devastating defeats, and his passionate and fair reporting about the University and its teams has never waned. He knew from his first assignment that enthusiastic Gopher fans depended on him to relay the events of the day, and he has taken that responsibility seriously every day of his career. His columns entertain and educate, but more than anything else, he has always delivered the news.

Whether penning a column for Minneapolis newspapers or sharing his thoughts over the air on WCCO Radio, countless Gopher coaches, student-athletes and staff found themselves on the other end of Hartman’s microphone. Almost all of them became one of Sid's many close personal friends.

There will never be another Sid Hartman. The Sid Hartman Press Box is a tribute to his work, his life and his legacy.

This is the fourth such media gathering area named in Sid's honor.  The others are the press conference room at Target Field, the press entrance at U-S Bank Stadium, and the media workroom at Vikings headquarters.

There's also a statue of Sid outside Target Center.

Sid's first sports article was in the old Minneapolis Tribune in 1948 about the Gopher football team's upcoming spring game.

He's worked at WCCO radio for more than sixty years, and next March 15 celebrates his 99th birthday.
