Minneapolis Police are warning students of an attempted sexual assault that occurred early Friday morning near the University of Minnesota campus.

Police said a female student was walking alone around 6:00 am near the 600 block of 8th Street SE when the attack occurred.

“As she was walking an individual was walking towards her on the sidewalk,” said John Elder, Public Information Officer for the Minneapolis Police Department. “The suspect got past her turned and grabbed her.”

Elder says the man attempted to pull the woman into a nearby bush while he groped her. He said the woman screamed and fought off the attacker. Elder said a neighbor heard the screaming and came out of their home, that’s when the suspect ran away into the neighborhood.

“We have been distributing flyers in the area, knocking on doors, talking to people, delivering public safety messages. Making sure people are aware of what happened,” said Elder.

The woman described the man to be 5 feet 9 inches tall, unknown race and age, wearing all black and smelling of cigarettes.

The University of Minnesota Police Department is working closely with the Minneapolis Police Department on the case. Anyone with information is asked to call the CrimeStoppers of Minnesota at 888-222-8477 or electronically through
