West River Parkway open again, mudslide report was false alarm

Road that was closed was near site of 2014 mudslide

West River Parkway in Minneapolis open for traffic after crews closed it following what turned out to be a false report about a mudslide.

The report came in while the area was drenched by torrentional rains on Thursday night.

The part of the road that was closed was in the same area where a major mudslide covered the roadway with dirt, grass, branches and entire trees.

That was in the spring of 2014 and the roadway wasn't reopened until 2016.

Part of that work included the construction of retaining walls not far above the roadway, well below street level of the University of Minnesota Medical Center.

Those walls held fast after Thursday's rainfall.

The National Weather Center reported two inches of rain at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on Thursday night.
