For the last week staff in Rochester, Minnesota have been getting the city ready for President Donald Trump’s visit. The President will speak at the Mayo Civic Center Thursday evening in Rochester, and City Administrator Steve Rymer said they only had a week to get ready.

“I’ve been extremely impressed with the entire team from our police department to our fire department, public works, transit, everyone has just come together rather quickly and started to work through all the planning and contingency planning,” said Rymer.

The busiest time for those in Rochester will be between 5pm and 9pm. Rymer said the safety of the President, local residents, businesses and visitors will be there top priority. The city also is treating the day like a holiday.

“Transit systems all day will be free, regardless if you’re coming to the event or not,” said Rymer. “You’re going to see multiple road closures around our government center and library and the Mayo Civic Center.”

The airport will also be impacted and airspace restrictions over Rochester mean no unauthorized flying, including drones.

City staff suggest visitors use Park and Ride lots near Rochester Community and Technical College. And if you're commuting, Municipal Parking ramps are expected to fill up fast.

“I think any time you have a person like the President of the United States coming to your community it really brings the community together in some ways, in other ways there’s concerns,” said Rymer. “The other thing that we’ve been preparing for are those that are here to support the president and those that maybe wanting to protest. So we’ve been working with them as well.”

At least two protests have already been scheduled in Rochester. The City of Rochester also released the following information:

  • The following items will not be permitted in the building: bags, backpacks, large purses, umbrellas, posters, banners, signs, professional cameras with detachable lenses, tripods, monopods, selfie sticks, and GoPro cameras.
  • Entrance to the building for the President Trump Campaign Rally will be located off of the Riverfront Plaza, located on the south-side of Mayo Civic Center. The line will form here. Street level west entrances to the building will be closed to the public.
