Winter parking restrictions in St. Paul to make room for emergency vehicles

No parking on even-numbered side for rest of the month

There's no parking on the even-numbered side of residential streets in St. Paul, at least for the rest of the month of March.

This step, called "unusual" by St. Paul mayor Melvin Carter, was made to create enough room for emergency vehicles to get through streets that remain choked with snow piles from the record-setting February storms.

"I hope people will recognize that we tried our best to hold off on doing something like this as long as possible," said Carter. "And, simultaneously, that public safety has got to be our top priority."

Minneapolis began winter parking restrictions last week.

Both cities are expected to maintain winter parking restrictions for the rest of March.
